Rebecca Kite performs beautiful and engaging music on the concert marimba. This
musical instrument has a history of over five thousand years in almost every
continent and culture in the world. It originated in southeast Asia, then
migrated through Europe in the form of the xylophone and to Africa in the
many forms of African marimbas. Brought to the western hemisphere by slaves,
the marimba was expanded into a five octave chromatic instrument in
Guatemala and Mexico. It came to the US in the early twentieth century where
it was extremely popular and used in the early days of sound recording and
radio.
Marimba! Rebecca Kite creates a captivating interactive assembly program, weaving the story of the marimba with her performance of its music. Musical selections are drawn from world-wide folk melodies highlighting the unique qualities of the marimba. Her repertoire includes compositions from western classical music and world folk traditions, including compositions for the African xylophone and Javanese gamelan, as well as contemporary marimba music
from Japan.
